Internally, it is important for your employees to understand what titles mean in the organization. The title should be clearly aligned with levels of accountability. I’ve known CIO’s who wanted to be aligned with the products in the business, so they added Chief Product Officer (CPO) to their title.
Externally, job titles play a huge role in how potential customers will perceive you as a representative of your business. Oftentimes, people will curtail their titles to avoid negative perception.
